Just before 3 AM, a 19 year old Army Soldier was leaving New Waverly to return to his unit when his car left the roadway on Highway 150 near the city limits. His Nissan Maxima struck a fence and several trees before flipping upside down and trapping him in the crushed vehicle.
New Waverly Firefighters and Walker County EMS from the New Waverly station arrived within 3 minutes of being dispatched and reported an extended extrication time. The EMS crew began accessing the victim while New Waverly Firefighters began a difficult extrication process with their hydraulic rescue tools. Huntsville Firefighters responded to assist and upon their arrival they worked to raise the car with lifting struts to give the New Waverly firefighters enough room to remove the victim.
Working together they were able to raise and stabilize the vehicle and remove the victim from under his vehicle. Walker County EMS transported him to Conroe Regional Medical Center with multiple injuries but he is expected to survive.
The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the cause of the accident.
