NWS Houston Weather Update – Coastal Rain Threat Continues Today

A disorganized mass of showers and thunderstorms continues to make its way slowly up the Texas Gulf Coast. This will bring us another day with periods of showers and thunderstorms. The best potential for rainfall through the day continues to be along the coast. Because of this, the previous days of rainfall, and possibly poorer drainage from elevated tide levels, the flood watch in effect through at least early tomorrow morning remains in place. At the coast, rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are anticipated, with localized higher amounts up to around 6-10 inches possible as a reasonable worst case. North of I-10, rainfall is expected to be less than an inch, with a reasonable worst case of up to three inches in the strongest storms.

Farther inland, showers and storms will be more scattered in nature, with generally lower rain totals. Even here, however, the copious amounts of moisture present could allow a stronger storm to produce high enough rain rates to cause isolated spots of flooding if it falls over a vulnerable location.

There is a chance for this watch to be extended should a threat of heavy rainfall linger deeper into the day Friday, but for now, expectations are that rainfall potential will diminish enough to allow this watch to expire. Also, the National Hurricane Center does give this area a 10 percent chance of development into a tropical cyclone over the next day or so. Ultimately, even if this somewhat remote possibility were to occur, the impacts for our area would be the same.
