Edwin “Sonny” Stephan, 87, of Conroe, Texas passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home with those closest to him and holding his wife’s hand. He was born to and preceded in death by Adolf and Meta (Everett) Stephan and in-laws Elijio and Virginia Mendez of Conroe, Tx.
Southern Methodist and Kilgore college is where he attended after graduating from Conroe High School. He was in the U.S.N.R. from January 1954 until he was honorably discharged in January 1962.
He was a man of many trades and professions throughout his life, including working for his family business Everetts hardware, being a reserve officer for Conroe Police Department, going offshore for Shell oil, being a commissioner, Firefighter, and First Responder for Grangerland Fire Department, and finally settling down with mowing pieces of property for the City of Conroe.
Edwin spent 39 wonderful years with his beloved wife Elizabeth (Liz) Mendez Stephan, with which they shared 7 children, 9 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren who referred to him as “PawPaw”
His hobbies over the years included hunting, reloading ammunition, woodworking, going to the gun range, building birdhouses, buying lottery tickets, and riding his tractor around his property. He looked forward to visits with his grandkids and had an amazing memory that followed some incredible stories. People will remember him as having a stubbornly strong spirit and helping anyone in need. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Liz; children, Carrie Koenig Rodriguez (Melissa), Katherine Koenig Elliott (Jason), Larry Koenig (Amy), Elizabeth Koenig Dean (James), Christopher Stephan Hare, Allison Stephan, and Craig Stephan.
Grandchildren; Alexis Grissam (William), Jordan Rodriguez, Courtney Rodriguez, Cody Rushing (Whitney), Hunter Rushing, Amber Koenig, Chance Koenig, Caitlin Harmon (Cody) and Colton Dean.
Great Grandchildren; Briar Grissam, Ki’a Rushing, Braxton Rushing, Kali Wiggins, Paisley Harmon, Bentley Harmon, Lily Dean, Stetson Dean, and River Koenig.
Family and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend his Memorial service in The Chapel at Conroe Funeral Directors on Saturday, February 11, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. We will be having a celebration of life for anyone wanting to join after the service.
Went to everetts hardware, 100’s of times. As a young man, my job would send me in there to get something. I’d spend an hour just milling around, looking at all the stuff. It was the only place in town. They fixed my lawnmower and cut glass for me. Then Furrows came….grrr…..
