POLK COUNTY EVACUATIONS IN PROGRESS-DAM COMPROMISED

Polk County emergency officials are urging residents near the Carter Lake Dam in Camden to evacuate after reports that the dam has been compromised. In a post to Facebook, Polk County Emergency Management said there is damage to the embankment of the dam, and property owners are currently assessing the risk of a potential breach. Residents living south of the dam, particularly along Henry Darden Road, Marie Road, Community Drive, Bo Peep, Herb Collins Road, and Girard, could be in the path of potential flooding if the dam gives way. Officials are asking those in the affected areas to evacuate immediately and avoid the zone shown in emergency maps until further notice. The evacuation order is a precaution while crews work to determine the extent of the damage, especially since nighttime conditions are making it difficult to assess the situation. Those who need a place to stay are encouraged to first seek shelter with friends or family. For residents unable to make other arrangements, a temporary shelter has been opened at Dunbar Gym, located at 1103 Dunbar Avenue in Livingston.
