Preteen injured in bizarre 4-wheeler crash

Just after 8 p.m., five ATV’s were southbound on FM 1314 after a day on the river. One of the 4-wheelers, driven by Eduardo Silva of Highlands, was using a rope to tow an 11-year-old boy on another 4-wheeler that was not running.

When they attempted to turn into a school driveway the brakes failed on the towing vehicle, causing them both to go out of control and striking a manhole concrete column.

Both were ejected, and the boy was trapped under the vehicle for a short time. Passersby assisted in getting him to the road and calling 911. The boy was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston by MCHD EMS in stable condition with a broken jaw. The other driver was taken to Hermann Hospital in The Woodlands in stable condition.

DPS investigated the accident, and since it is illegal to drive an all terrain vehicle on a public roadway, all five were towed from the scene. It was also determined that the four-wheeler driven by Silva was reported stolen in Liberty County.

The investigation is continuing.
