Kayla was an adorable Chihuahua mix puppy who came to Montgomery County Animal Shelter (MCAS) with both of her back legs broken? She was in desperate need of a surgery that would cost a whopping $3,000. We reached out to our supporters for help and we are happy to report that Kayla is well on her way to recovery!
Before coming in the shelter, Kayla’s journey had not been easy. MCAS staff suspected that the identical breaks in Kayla’s back legs were the result of a fall or having been dropped from a considerable height. Everyone agreed saving Kayla would most likely require a complicated surgery, a lengthy recovery period – and a lot of money. Carol DeWitt, Kayla’s foster mom said, “The vet who did the original x-rays even said up front that it was going to difficult to find an orthopedic surgeon capable of this type of repair. But we got lucky on our first try when Dr. Wall with Animal Clinics of The Woodlands agreed to perform Kayla’s surgery.”
During the surgery, both of Kayla’s back legs had to be re-broken. Dr. Wall then placed two pins that were crisscrossed in the knees and a straight pin in each leg below the knees. Kayla had a difficult time after the surgery and developed a massive infection in both legs. Her incisions split open and she had to return to the clinic where Dr. Giordano, also with Animal Clinics of The Woodlands, placed staples in her legs. After five different antibiotics and laser therapy she has made significant progress. Her staples are scheduled to be removed in June and Carol is hoping Kayla’s dreaded ‘cone of shame’ can be removed shortly. Carol estimates that Kayla will be ready for her new home in July.
MCAS and Carol would like to thank Dr. Wall and his staff and all those who donated toward Kayla’s care for their generosity. Thanks to these caring people Kayla received the surgery she so greatly deserved and will soon be well enough for adoption.
