READER TALKS ABOUT BEING WITH A WOODLANDS CHILD DURING CHEMO TREATMENTS

Shara Côté

On September 28th 2016 our local girl Madison Perez was diagnosed with Leukemia, since that day most of her young life has been spent in hospital receiving chemotherapy, multiple lumber punctures and procedures I cannot even pronounce.
Today, I spent several hours with Madison at the Texas Children’s Hospital, while she was poked, prodded and suffered unimaginable pain. The nurses were trying to gain access to her port; which is not in an ideal position due to complications at time of surgery. It absolutely broke my heart to watch her suffer and then to be told her tiny body was not strong enough to receive Chemo today. It would need to be scheduled in a few days and she will have to go through this procedure all over again. I asked her how many Chemo treatments she had received and she replied “Oh Shara…I have lost count”.
Today, instead of chemo, she would need another transfusion of platelets. Her body is not currently producing red blood cells or platelets like a healthy body does. Failure to receive these regular transfusion could be fatal, as she is at high risk of ‘bleeding out’ via the smallest injury.
Madison who turned 15 last month demonstrated unbelievable bravery, her positive attitude and smile is really contagious. Madison also shared her hopes, dreams and wishes. Her dream is to be able to adopt children when she is older. (Astonishing and admirable dream for a 15 year old), her hope is to travel to Hawaii or Disney land, and her wish is to go on a shopping trip to purchase clothes that are brightly colored to cheer herself up and make others smile.
My hope is to raise enough funds to be able to send Madison to the Mall for a few hours in order to buy some clothes. If you would like to make a donation and help make her simple wish come true, please donate on the PayPal.me link below.
