RETIRED HARRIS COUNTY DEPUTY DROWNS

PRESS RELEASE FROM GRIMES COUNTY SHERIFF DON SOWELL-

On Saturday July 19, 2014 at approximately 8:00 a.m., the Grimes County Sheriff’s Office along with St. Joseph EMS responded to 8328 FM 1748 at the Yarborough Lake Fishing Club in regards to a possible drowning. Upon arrival, St Joseph EMS and the Grimes county Sheriff’s office located a male subject on which CPR was being performed. The male, who was later identified as being Donald Ray McBroom, age 65 of Tomball, TX, was a retired Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy had arrived at the lake to go fishing with James Poppenhausen, who is also a retired Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy, in the early morning hours. The two had returned to the pier in order to retrieve some equipment when Mr. McBroom appeared to have tried to leave the boat which was not secured to the pier and fell into the water. Mr. McBroom was pronounced deceased by JP John LeFlore and Mr. McBroom was transported to Central Texas Autopsy in Lockhart, TX for an autopsy. Mr. McBroom’s next of kin was notified in person by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
