La Michoacana Grocery store at 1424 Spring Cypress, just east of I—45 in Spring was robbed at 2:14 p.m. Wednesday. The call came into Harris County dispatchers as a robbery in progress with at least six black male suspects. Harris County Sheriff’s deputies responded. While en route, an update was sent to the units reporting the suspects’ vehicle was believed to be a brown Impala or Camry.
Jason Knight, a Marine veteran, was sitting in the Sports Club next door to La Michoacana store when he says he saw two black males run toward the store and then moments later, run back the way they came, toward the freeway with a grocery store employees chasing after them. Knight went to the back door of the club and saw them run across a field into a waiting vehicle. He ran back to the front, jumped onto his motorcycle and gave chase. He caught up to them and followed them around the u-turn to Spring Stuebner then west to Holzwarth. He said he was close enough to see them in the vehicle counting money. That is when the two suspects and two others in the vehicle realized they were being followed. They jumped into the turn lane and fled south on Holzwarth. Jason was able to get a license number and spotted a deputy and gave him the information. The license plate came back to the Garden City Apartments at 9601 W, Montgomery, in Acres Homes and one block from the Houston Northside Command Station. Units from Harris County and Houston Police converged on the area and started watching for the vehicle. One unit spotted the vehicle, a silver Toyota and started to follow as other units closed in. Harris County Sheriff’s Office Helicopter Air 1 was also over the scene. After turning through several streets a deputy attempted to stop the vehicle. That is when it sped up. With multiple units in pursuit the four jumped out on West Gulf Bank. Three were immediately captured, one with $30,000 in his pocket. The other is still at large. Two of the three were juveniles and amazingly one of their mothers arrived at the scene of the crime a short time later.
The trio was returned to the scene where they were positively identified.
Harris County is investigating several other robberies of the same chain of stores as is Pasadena Police and Fresno Police where they each had a store robbed.
They feel they could be involved in at least 10 robberies.
Knight said he didn’t fear for his life as he realized they were armed. He said you take your life in your hands everyday on a motorcycle. When it’s my time it’s my time”, Knight said.
