SAM HOUSTON NATIONAL FOREST FIRE

The US Forest Service is conducting an 1100 acre prescribed burn in the Sam Houston National Forest. Recently California suffered catastrophic fires destroying hundreds of homes, killing several and costing millions to fight. Most of this was due to poor forestry management. Without controlled burns when conditions are right, ground vegetation is allowed to grow for years. Then when conditions are right and there is a fuel source it turns into a wildfire. Close to what we had in Montgomery County in 2011 where many homes were lost in the west part of Montgomery County. With weather and moisture conditions are ideal forestry officials are able to light these fires so that they are extremely slow moving, this allows wildlife to be able to move from the fires path and does not destroy the trees.
