Saturday afternoon Sam Houston State University Police Officer William Weathersby was at the Republic Apartments in Huntsville with his girlfriend Rebeca Keefe, 23. He had disassembled his personal 9mm pistol for cleaning and was in the process of reassembling the weapon when it discharged. The round hit Keefe in the back. She was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston by Life Flight. At this time she is in stable condition with a non life threatening injury.
The Texas Rangers were called in to conduct the investigation. Today they turned their findings over to the District Attorney’s Office. The investigation was closed as accidental discharge and no charges were filed.
Weathersby has been a police officer with the University for two-years.
