Two weeks ago Quino Alonzo contacted his wife and told her that he had done some dealing with his crew aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt and he would be home for Christmas. His three children Eric, Caroline and John had been a little down this year as it was going to be the first Christmas in Alonzo’s ten deployments spanning 22-years that he would not make it home for the holidays.
His wife Joy said he had missed many other holidays over the years including the births of some of his children.
Joy went to work finding a tall box and wrapping it in the garage for the children’s Christmas present.
Alonzo’s ship got into Norfolk, Virginia on this cold sunny day minus any snow. Alonzo then left for the airport for his trip to Houston. The children had been up most of the evening playing and watching television and were very close to going to bed when Joy told them it was time for an early gift.
Alonzo would have been much earlier if it hadn’t been for a mechanical delay of his flight home.
The children walked outside and sleepy eyed opened the box. The faces changed immediately as their father emerged.
Alonzo said he will finish this tour when he goes back January 1 and most likely will retire in a year.
