An apparent “scam” internet business resulted in the sexual assault of a 19 year old north Liberty County woman in the early evening hours of Saturday, May 16th. At approximately 10:pm, the Sheriff’s Office was called by the parents of the victim who had initially gone to the Cleveland Police Department to report this offense. Deputy Stephanie Walden interviewed the victim who bore scratch marks and bruises and was very distraught over her terrible ordeal of which she described as being raped by two unknown men at an unconfirmed location off FM 787.
The victim reported she was in the process of buying a specific type belt for her boy friend and had made contact with who she believed to be “Julie Rae” with an internet business called “Leather Works by Julie Rae”. All communications with this alleged company was through a “chat room” and never by e-mail or telephone. This business owner would not take a credit card or debit card for payment but would only accept cash. Arrangements were made by “Julie Rae” to meet the victim at a remote location off FM 787 at around 6:pm Saturday evening to obtain the belt and pay for it. While the victim was waiting in her car, a black Nissan Frontier pick-up truck pulled up behind her and thinking it was “Julie Rae” in the truck, the victim got out and approached the vehicle. However, she noticed immediately the truck did not have a front license plate and a black male got out from the driver’s seat. The unknown man told the victim that his wife was baby-sitting their child and had ask him to deliver the belt. At the same time a Hispanic male got out of the driver’s side and both men began approaching the victim who, sensing trouble, tried to flee back to her vehicle. The men forced the victim into their truck and drove a short distance away where both men sexually assaulted the victim. After the assault, the two suspects fled the scene in the black pick-up truck.
Sergeant Investigator Josh Cummins is conducting the follow up investigation and stated that he was able to obtain a preliminary description of the suspects with a more detailed description to follow at a later date.
The suspects are described as a black male, possibly in his 30’s and of average height and weight wearing a long sleeve shirt. The Hispanic male is also described as possibly being in his 30’s and of average height and weight and also wearing long sleeves. They fled the scene in the black pick-up truck in an unknown direction.
