Search over for local fugitive

The man at the center of a multi-agency ground and air manhunt in the Conroe area on Wednesday, and was first on the Montgomery County Crime Stoppers top ten this week, is finally behind bars.

Benjamin “Benny” Burton, 26, of 2629 Defore Rd. in Conroe is charged with three counts of first-degree felony delivery of a controlled substance. Burton surrendered to the US Marshals Service on Friday and was booked into the Montgomery County Jail.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit caught up with Burton on Wednesday near his family home in the area of FM 2083 and SH 105 East, but Burton managed to get away.

Over the next few hours, multiple agencies responded to assist the SIU in capturing Burton, including the Pct. 2 Constable’s Office, Conroe Police Department, MCSO District 1, MCSO SWAT, US Drug Enforcement Administration and Texas Department of Public Safety, but he seemingly vanished.

Burton’s passenger on Wednesday, 29-year-old Jason Alan Manuel of Huntsville, was arrested on the scene and charged with making a false report to a police officer after allegedly trying to convince detectives the man who fled was not Burton. Manuel has since been released on $1,000 bond.

Less than 48 hours after the organized search ended, Burton turned himself in. As of this writing, no bond amounts are listed.
