Sheriff Weighs in on July 4th DWI enforcement

Montgomery County law enforcement agencies will utilize collected data and detailed analysis for the first time to “zero-in” on specific roads, days and times where intoxicated drivers have historically crashed or been arrested during the upcoming Independence Day weekend.

Utilizing innovative strategies to reduce fatalities, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, in cooperation with the District Attorney’s Office and other state and municipal agencies, have reviewed impaired driving patterns and will coordinate law enforcement efforts to combat this potentially deadly crime over the holiday weekend.

“Traditional enforcement strategies are less than effective,” said Sheriff Rand Henderson.  “If we want to truly make a difference by reducing injuries and deaths, county agencies need to start leveraging modern resources to take intoxicated drivers off our roadways.”

“Our capabilities are still in the initial stages, but we have accumulated enough raw data to begin our hunt for patterns and examining them from multiple perspectives,” he said.  Sheriff Henderson is also excited that law enforcement agencies have come together in this manner to coordinate DWI enforcement efforts is a first.

“An initiative like this wasn’t possible with our previous computer systems,” Sheriff Henderson stated.  The sheriff’s office has accumulated data on the location, dates and times from more than 2,400 arrests by law enforcement agencies for vehicular intoxication offenses in the past 18 months.

Agencies who have pledged attendance thus far include the Conroe Police Department, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and Montgomery Count Constables for Precincts One and Three.

Media who wish to attend the briefing should meet at the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office Press Conference room located at 207 W. Phillips St, Conroe, Texas, 77301 at 9:45 a.m.  There will be an opportunity to interview agency representatives following the briefing.  The Sheriff’s Office will also make charts and diagrams presented at the briefing available to the media.
