SHSU To Address Campus Carry At Meetings

On Aug. 1, 2016, State Senate Bill No. 11 will go into effect, allowing students, faculty, staff and other visitors who have a concealed handgun license to carry their concealed handguns while on campuses across the state.

To address concerns and make recommendations, Sam Houston State University President Dana Hoyt has appointed representatives from across the SHSU community to a Campus Carry task force. The chair of this committee is Phillip Lyons, dean of the College of Criminal Justice.

The Campus Carry Committee will host two public town hall meetings, on Oct. 27, from 3:30-5:30 p.m., and on Oct. 28, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., in the Beto Criminal Justice Center’s Killinger Auditorium. The events also will stream live at cjcenter.org/live.

The meetings will allow faculty, staff, students, and members of the Huntsville community to discuss concerns and will assist committee members in gathering information for recommendations to President Hoyt and the Texas State University System Board of Regents.

The committee also has prepared a survey for stakeholders to identify their concerns, which can be found online at cjcenter.org/temp/_shsu-carry.html. The results of the survey will be used to structure the town hall meetings and to assist in the committee’s communications with the campus community.
