SJRA Approves a Reduction in Wholesale Water Rates (& Other Updates)

SJRA Board of Directors approved a proposal to reduce both the groundwater and surface water wholesale rates for those customers that are participants in SJRA’s Groundwater Reduction Plan (GRP) beginning September 2024.

GRP customers’ groundwater rate will be reduced from $2.99 to $2.67 per 1,000 gallons of groundwater pumped by GRP Participants. The surface water rate will be reduced from $3.41 to $3.26 per 1,000 gallons of treated surface water delivered from Lake Conroe to participants.

The board’s action to lower water rates comes on the heels of a board decision in March to refund $12 million to SJRA wholesale water customers after two non-paying GRP customers paid money that was owed to SJRA and the GRP had an unanticipated increase in revenue due to recent droughts in the area.

House Passes DO NOT FLUSH Labeling Bill

Recently, the US House of Representatives passed a bill, the Wastewater Infrastructure Pollution Prevention and Environmental Safety Act or WIPPES Act, which would require the Federal Trade Commission to issue regulations requiring entities responsible for labeling or retail packaging of certain premoistened, nonwoven wipes (ie: baby, cleaning, or personal care wipes) to label such products clearly and conspicuously with the phrase DO NOT Flush and accompanying symbol. The bill has been read twice in the Senate and referred to the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.

Please remember to always trash wipes, and DO NOT flush them, even if labeled as flushable to protect water quality and the environment. Taking these small actions that will help avoid costly repair bills.

Lake Conroe Remains Zebra Mussel Free

This spring, SJRA’s zebra mussel monitoring stations all indicated that zebra mussels were not present in Lake Conroe. Zebra mussels negatively impact the ecosystem of the lake and attach to vessels and infrastructure in the lake. Great job by our Lake Conroe Division who works proactively with marinas around the lake to help mitigate the introduction of zebra mussels into Lake Conroe.

Boats entering Lake Conroe always need to be clean, drained, and dried after having been at other lakes. To learn how to clean, drain, dry your boat, watch Texas Parks and Wildlife’s video.

As we approach the middle of summer, boaters are increasingly out and about on Lake Conroe. Some boaters are new to Lake Conroe, and some are well experienced on the lake.  Either way, it is always good to be reminded of key boater safety tips to ensure you and your family can be safe this summer.
Be on the lookout for our Boater Safety Refresher article in Dock Line Magazine.

The San Jacinto River Authority (SJRA) receives no money from the state, nor does it collect any type of taxes.
SJRA’s mission is to develop, conserve, and protect the water resources of the San Jacinto River basin. Covering all or part of seven counties, the organization’s jurisdiction includes the entire San Jacinto River watershed, excluding Harris County. The SJRA is one of two dozen river authorities in the State of Texas, and like other river authorities, its primary purpose is to implement long-term, regional projects related to water supply and wastewater treatment.
