TARKINGTON, TX- In Montgomery County, we’re blessed with plenty of wonderful paid firefighters. However, our neighbors in Tarkington (that’s just the other side of Cleveland in Liberty County) are an all-volunteer fire department. Fire Chief Paul Gregory has held that position since 1995 and his paying job as a firefighter is in Montgomery County. Departments in both counties have always helped one another in emergencies in local communities, both manmade and natural. Tarkington Volunteer Fire Department needs the community’s help now. They’re in the last days of looking for sponsors for their 40th Annual BBQ & Auction, on September 28 at Station 1 (details below).
The event helps keep the department serving the community for another year. It’s vital not only to the Tarkington community but to the always increasing number of folks who travel through that area, and people in the surrounding areas where TVFD may provide mutual aid. Some Montgomery County residents remember, not so long ago, when our fire departments didn’t have the funds to pay firefighters and sometimes firefighters had to pool the money in their pockets to gas up the firetrucks and respond to a call. They also had to do “Fill the Boot” and hope the community appreciated them enough to help. Those were difficult times to keep our communities served and many would argue it took far more dedication for someone to work another job all day or all week and just sit down to dinner, or just get to sleep when that call dropped, and they had to leave not knowing when they’d be home again. That’s our past in EMC, but for Tarkington Volunteer Fire Department, that’s still reality.
Please take a moment to check out the ways you can help. If you can’t sponsor, you can donate. If you can’t donate, do yourself and TVFD a favor and have some of the best barbecue you ever tasted on 9/28! If you can’t do any of that, please share the information below on social media and email this link. They’d risk their lives to save yours and your family’s lives – Let them know it matters to you that people are still willing to do that as volunteers and that all their work is appreciated.
