An update regarding the recent kitchen fire at Claughton Middle School. Although the fire was small and contained in the cafeteria kitchen, the smoke damage was extensive. It will require the removal of everything that was contaminated, including ceiling tiles, to ensure proper ventilation is restored to the building.
Thorough inspections were conducted today by the Fire Marshall, health department, remediation experts and insurance inspectors. Based on their findings, the decision has been made to close school at Claughton Thursday, Oct. 24 and Friday, Oct. 25 so the building can be thoroughly cleaned. Even with crews of 250 or more working around the clock, we will not be able to use the building any sooner than Monday, Oct. 28. Ensuring that the building is safe for students and staff is extremely important to us.
Outdoor athletic practices and competitions will continue as scheduled. Students involved in those activities will receive a call with more information from their coaches. We will continue to keep you updated by phone and email. If you have questions or concerns, please call the campus at 281-891-7950.
