It took years for her to find the words, but on April 4, 2023, a courageous 19-year-old survivor came forward to report the sexual abuse she endured at the hands of her mother’s ex-boyfriend. Her bravery, driven by a desire to finally seek closure, prompted a comprehensive investigation by the Conroe Police Department. That investigation ultimately revealed the abuse began when she was just 10 years old and continued for more than five years. What started with what seemed like an innocent game of “horsey” gradually escalated to inappropriate touching and, over time, became ongoing sexual abuse. This grooming behavior made it difficult to understand the boundaries being crossed, and by the time she realized what was happening, the trauma had already taken root.
On May 9, 2025, the trial commenced in the 435th District Court, presided over by Judge Patty Maginnis. Prosecutor Frances Manzo presented the case on behalf of the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office.
At trial, jurors heard powerful testimony from the survivor herself, as well as a psychologist
specializing in child maltreatment, Detectives with the Conroe Police Department, family
members, and a trained Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE). Investigators were able to
corroborate details of the abuse through consistent evidence gathered over the course of the
investigation. The defendant took the stand and claimed innocence, but the jury wasn’t
convinced.
After four days of emotional testimony and just over an hour of deliberation, the jury returned a swift verdict—Guilty. Following the punishment phase, which included additional testimony and impact statements, the jury sentenced the defendant to 50 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
