TDCJ Inmate electrocuted

HUNTSVILLE – A Texas Department of Criminal Justice inmate died Tuesday afternoon after
he was electrocuted while performing maintenance work on an underground
water main outside of the Huntsville “Walls” Unit.

The inmate, Todd Hughes, 39, was working with an inmate maintenance crew on
a broken water line when he was electrocuted, apparently by an adjacent
electrical line, at about 3 p.m. on Tuesday. Hughes was transported to
Huntsville Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

A second inmate was treated in the unit’s infirmary.

Todd Hughes was serving a 7-year sentence for intoxication manslaughter out
of Orange County. He was received by TDCJ on July 3, 2007.

TDCJ’s Office of Inspector General is investigating the accident.
