TEEN DROWNS IN LAKE CONROE

Sunday afternoon a teen who just celebrated his 17th birthday last week set out in his Kayak near the FM 1375 bridge in the Sam Houston National Forest which is part of Walker County. Just before 2 pm, the kayak dumped the young man into the 50-degree Lake Conroe in rough waters.  He did not have a life vest. Witnesses heard him call for help and attempted a rescue but he went under. Walker County Sheriff’s Office New Waverly Fire Department and Texas Game Wardens responded. By 6 pm with no recovery, the Montgomery County Precinct 1 Lake Patrol Dive Team and North Montgomery County Fire responded to the scene. Family and friends kept a vigil hoping for the best. It was just before 9 pm when the side scan sonar on the North Montgomery County located the victim. Divers then recovered the teen. 2021 was the deadliest year on Lake Conroe with six drownings. 2023 had no drownings on Lake Conroe.
