TEEN INVOLVED IN FATAL CRASH GIVEN 6-MONTHS AND PROBATION

Bruce who on March 4, 2017, was involved in a fatal crash on Honea Egypt Road. Bruce who was 17 at the time of the crash was charged with intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault. A family of 4 were struck after Bruce crossed the center line and hit their 2002 Lexus. All 4 were trapped in the vehicle. Lake Conroe Fire Department which responded within seconds had to extricate all 4. Three were unconscious and the fourth, 85-year-old Khatoon Lanewala died at the scene. In May of 2017, a $5.3 million lawsuit was filed by Mahera Yusuf who was the daughter to the deceased and was in the vehicle at the time. The Montgomery County Grand Jury no-billed most of the charges. They did accept a charge of negligent homicide against Bruce. Bruce appeared in court today after a plea deal was worked out. The charge was reduced to Injury to the Elderly. Bruce who fully co-operated with investigators definitely has been remorseful since the crash according to the Montgomery County District Attorneys office. He was sentenced today to 6-months in the Montgomery County Jail and 10 years probation. Andrew James, Chief of the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division issued a statement this evening.

Jared Bruce pled guilty today to the felony offense of Injury to an Elderly Individual arising from a March 4, 2017, fatal crash. Per the plea agreement, Bruce, who was 17 years of age at the time of the crash and without any prior criminal history, was sentenced to 10 years in prison, probated for 10 years and 6 months in jail as a condition of probation to begin today. The crash occurred as Bruce was traveling on Honea Egypt road while under the influence of alcohol and marijuana. Bruce lost control of his vehicle on a dangerous section of the road and collided with a vehicle occupied by Khatoon Lanewala, Bilquis Petiwala, and Shabbir and Mahera Yusuf. Khatoon died in the crash and Bilquis, Shabbir, and Mahera all suffered serious injuries. Bilquis Petiwala later passed away in February 2018. Although no outcome to this case can undo the damage that was done, Bruce showed significant remorse and has taken responsibility for his actions.
