Temporary paper tags – could be a violation

The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office has been receiving many complaints about vehicles that are not properly registered. Due to the numerous complaints, an instructional class dealing with “paper temporary tags” was recently held for Liberty County law enforcement officers. The class was hosted by Liberty County Precinct 2 Constable Les Hulsey. The class was well attended by several agencies. Several problem areas were discussed and plans were made to patrol those areas.

A joint operation by the Texas Department of Public Safety, Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, and Precinct 2 Constable’s Office was planned. The areas worked was Hwy 146 South in the Dayton area and FM-1010 in the Plum Grove area. A total of 16 commercial vehicles were issued citations and towed on 10/22/2020 and 21 commercial vehicles were towed on 10/23/2020. All the vehicles were displaying unauthorized temporary tags. (Texas Traffic Code 503.067). Also, there were several private passenger vehicles that were stopped for the same violation.

Displaying an unauthorized temporary tag or purchasing a temporary tag, unless you are a dealer or converter, is a Class C Misdemeanor. The person that is producing or reproducing the temporary tag or an item represented to be a temporary tag for the purpose of distributing the tag to someone other than a dealer or converter may be charged with a State Jail Felony.

(Note: If you know someone that is making and selling these type of temporary tags please contact the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office at 936-336-4500 x1. You may remain anonymous.
