LIBERTY COUNTY, TX- On November 30, around 10:30 p.m. Cleveland Police Department Officer J. Arnett responded to Love’s Truck Stop on FM 2025, in reference to a theft. While enroute, Communications told the Officer the reporting party said a black man wearing a blue hoodie entered the store and stole a pair of sunglasses. The reportee said another man accompanied the suspect, but hadn’t stolen anything. The reportee said both men were last seen leaving the store on bicycles, headed east toward Quick Trip. Officer Arnett immediately searched the area of Quick Trip but found no one matching the description of the two men.
Officer Arnett then went to Love’s to personally speak with the reportee. Through further investigation, Officer Arnet identified the man suspected of stealing the sunglasses from previous incidents. The man wearing the blue hoodie, and allegedly seen grabbing a pair of sunglasses before dashing out of the store, was identified as Cameron Laquand Woods.
The reportee told Officer Arnett she only wanted the sunglasses returned. Officer Arnett then said he’d try to find Woods and recover the stolen property, along with issuing him a Criminal Trespass Warning, which informs a person they are no longer welcome on the premises and returning will be grounds for arrest.
Officer Arnett then returned to the Quick Trip area to search for Woods and saw two bicycles leaned against the side of that store just prior to Woods appearing and getting onto one of them. Woods began to pedal toward the Officer’s patrol vehicle. Officer Arnett exited the vehicle and called out to Woods several times, as Wood quickly pedaled around the vehicle and through the parking lot, fleeing onto FM 2025.
Officer Arnett returned to his patrol vehicle, activated his emergency lights, and engaged in a low-speed pursuit as Woods pedaled faster. Woods continued to pedal feverishly as he fled eastbound before turning right on Blair Avenue and heading south. Officer Arnett then activated his siren, but Woods continued to travel southbound on N. Blair, only acknowledging the Officer’s presence by quickly raising up and lowering his right hand as the low-speed chase continued.
Officer Arnett attempted to stop Woods by using the patrol vehicle to cut him off. Unfortunately, the effort failed when the sly suspect used an evasive maneuver to again go around the patrol vehicle.
The low-speed pursuit continued onto N. Washington Avenue with lights and sirens activated. Then Woods turned into the parking lot of a Mexican restaurant and Officer Arnett made a second attempt to “cut him off”. Sadly, Woods again managed to avoid the Officer, making a U-turn and going back onto the roadway. Additional Cleveland Police Officers responded to assist Officer Arnett and they managed to detain him on a grassy area just off of Washington Avenue. Officers placed Woods under arrest for evading and had him sign a document stating he understood he couldn’t go onto the Love’s Truckstop property again, or it would be considered “criminal trespass” and he could be arrested again.
Cameron Laquand Woods, 25, is charge with class A misdemeanor Evading Arrest / Detention. He was booked into the Liberty County Jail and bond was set at $5,000.
