On Wednesday, San Jacinto County Commissioners swore in Greg Capers the new Sheriff. Capers defeated David Clark in the primary election. After the primaries, questions arose as to when Capers could actually take office.

Clark was  appointed Sheriff on January 15, 2013,  after the prior Sheriff James Walters died just six days after taking office. By state law, he could remain in office until after the November General Election even after losing the primary.

Capers has lived in San Jacinto County for the past 23 years. He has been active in the community over the years serving on the San Jacinto County Fair and Rodeo Association as a committeeman. He also served two terms as Commissioner of the San Jacinto County Emergency District 1 and President of the Coldspring FFA Booster Club.

Capers started his career as a guard with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in 1982, when he worked on the former death row at the Ellis Unit.

In 1984, he went to work for the Harris County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy. For 30 years, he served Harris County citizens as a patrolman, narcotics officer, detective in burglary and theft and was the second K-9 Officer in Harris County. While with the Auto Theft division he instituted the bait car program where a decoy vehicle would be set in a high crime area and deputies would wait for it to be stolen then capturing the thieves.

Capers retired earlier this year when he put his name on the ballot for Sheriff.

Capers plans to bring more leadership into the Sheriff’s Office as he begins his battle against crime in San Jacinto County.

After being sworn in, Capers named another former Harris County retired deputy, Joe Schultea,  as his Chief Deputy. Schultea has remained in law enforcement after his retirement, acting as Chief in Patton Village and as an investigator with the Splendora ISD Police.
