THIRD VICTIM IDENTIFIED IN SATURDAY CRASH

SAM HOUSTON CRASHLaw Enforcement Officials believe speed was a factor in yesterdays crash on the Sam Houston State University Campus.

The crash happened just before 5 am on a day which was to be filled with joy as hundreds graduated.

Three of the victims who died were identified as 19-year-old Blanca Espinal of Houston, 22-year-old Eric Torres of San Juan, and 20-year-old Alfonso Mata of Brownsville.  Mata was recently identified as the third deceased victim after SHSU officials initially released the wrong name.

SHSU President Dana Gibson released the following statement:

“Our Bearkat Family is deeply saddened by the loss of our students in this tragic accident. Our hearts go out to their family and friends during this difficult time.”

The surviving victim was identified as 22-year-old Thomas Roling of The Woodlands.  He remains at St. Joseph Hospital in Bryan and is listed in good condition. He is expected to be released later today.

A DPS Team including troopers from Montgomery County are expected to return to the campus Monday to reconstruct the crash scene
