Montgomery County Judge Craig Doyal opened Commissioners Court Monday morning at 9:30 and asked for a volunteer in the audience for an opening prayer. Again like last week Mary Hammer Menzel volunteered in the opening prayer. Like last week she brought in the road bond as part of the prayer expressing how it was really needed in Montgomery County. However then she referred to the ones against it as “Tools of Satan”. This angered many in the courtroom and as Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon took to the podium to recognize National Crime Victim’s Rights Week he put his opening off for a minute and addressed the court on the issue if the prayer Menzel offered.
“In my opinion, prayer is a unification issue and it brings everyone of the same faith together”, said Ligon, “I don’t think that prayer should be divisive. I certainly don’t think that people should be cast as Satan’s tools”. He continued that if the prayer is about Jesus, Jesus main mode of transportation was walking. I don;t think any of us want to walk anymore, we do need to move forward, he said.
Commissioner Noack said he believed Commissioner Doyal needs to look for someone else to lead in prayer.
Laura Fillault came up moments later and announced she was speaking for the road bond. “First off I want to say I am not a tool of Satan, I didn’t appreciate that part of the prayer, I do believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior”. she said and said she believed he was worried about other things besides a road bond. Fillault said it is a road bond not a satanic ritual.
She was not alone in being against what was said,
However, Montgomery County Precinct 1 Commissioner Mike Meador, said she did a great job and to criticize personal prayer is wrong and offensive.
This was not the first time she has brought prayer into the bond issue. In the last Commissioners Court meeting she said,”Father, I want to lift up this road bond to you and just ask you to help the people realize this county has got to have ways to get around”.
Recently, Menzel appeared in an ad for Keep Montgomery County Moving PAC. In it she said, “I am for the road bond and the Lord is too”. When a group approached the PAC about removing it, she was defended by Nelda Blair who said Menzel was being persecuted because of her faith.
Nelda Blair is one of the big supporters of the road bond. She is also known to many as the “MOCO Debt Collector”. Her website says she is Nelda Luce Blair, Public Speaker; Author; TV Commentator; Blogger Philanthropist; Animal Lover; Devoted Christian; Proud 5th Generation. Formerly of The Woodlands Township board of directors, she and her husband Jim have $5.4 million home for sale in The Woodlands. It may be interesting to note that CNN paints quite a different picture of she and husband Jim.
CNN Money recently ran a story on her and her husband Jim.
CNN STORY ON BLAIR-INSIDE THE LIVES OF MILLIONAIRE DEBT COLLECTORS.
It also appears while others who come to Commissioners Court need to find a place in the parking garage to park or in the street as there is limited space in the Sadler Building parking lot, that isn’t for Blair. She has made he own parking place, against the curb and just skirting the legality of if it is a no parking area or not. Certainly where most buildings have the curb area reserved for emergencies and fire trucks, this curb isn’t painted so it has become her own personal parking spot.
