Two robbery suspects are on the run after a Wild West-style shootout at a northwest Harris County gas station Saturday night.
An off-duty Tomball police officer stopped at the Shell station on Highway 6 at Huffmiester at around 9 pm, reportedly in the middle of a robbery.
When the Tomball officer pulled into the parking lot, two black male suspects in ski masks and carrying guns were leaving. He identified himself as a police officer and ordered the suspects to freeze. Instead, they opened fire. The officer returned fire with only his truck shielding him from flying bullets.
There were several vehicles in the parking lot belonging to customers who were getting fuel. There was also a taco stand along the edge of the parking lot which was very busy.. Besides robbing the cash drawer in the Shell Station the suspects robbed two customers in the business.
Harris County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Thomas Gilliland said, “They exchanged a lot of gunfire, probably anywhere from 15 to 20 rounds were fired between the two areas.”
The suspects fled. Authorities followed a trail of leaking fluids from the robber’s stolen truck to a nearby apartment complex. The truck, filled with bullet holes was abandon but blood was found inside. They used a helicopter and K-9 units to search for the suspects but did not find them.
