Traffic Stop Results in Multiple Felony Charges

HARRIS COUNTY, TX- On Monday, Deputies with Pct. 4 Constable Mark Herman’s office conducted a traffic stop in the 300 block of N. Sam Houston Pkwy E. The driver, 35-year-old Darrell Cotton, had nine open warrants for his arrest, through Precinct 4. Turns out Cotton is also a convicted felon, which makes the loaded gun Deputies then allegedly found in his vehicle a serious crime. What’s more, a check revealed the gun had been reported stolen. Deputies’ vehicle search also revealed 17 bottles of (prescription required) Promethazine, 29 ounces of marijuana, and $4,460 in cash.

Public records show Cotton has a lengthy criminal history. He was charged with first-degree felony Aggravated Robbery with a Deadly Weapon in 2014 and the third-degree felony charge Felon in Possession of a Firearm. It appears those charges were dismissed in exchange for a guilty plea to Evading Arrest / Detention with Previous Conviction. The list of arrests, charges, court appearances, and jail stays is lengthy.

“Darrell Cotton was arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail, charged with Theft of a Firearm, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Possession of Marijuana, and the nine Class C warrants. He is awaiting bond out of the 174th District Court,” Constable Mark Herman said.
