TRUCK RUNNING STOP SIGN STRIKES DPS TROOPER

Trooper Ray Sanders who was a Department of Public Safety Trooper in Montgomery County for a time before transferring to Liberty County was involved in a serious accident on Tuesday.

Just before 11:30 a.m. Trooper Sanders was leaving the scene of an accident in which two persons were taken into custody near Rye approximately seventeen miles east of Cleveland. One of the prisoners was taken by another Trooper to the Liberty County Jail. The other was taken by EMS going to Cleveland Hospital to check him for his minor injuries from the crash.

The ambulance left westbound with Trooper Sanders following down FM 787. As the ambulance passed the Shepherd cut-off on FM 223 a pick-up truck driven by Lloyd Morgan, age 86,  of Morse, Louisiana approached the intersection southbound on FM 223 and failed to stop for the stop sign. Entering the intersection he struck Trooper Sanders almost head on as Morgan turned onto FM 787 eastbound.

According to a witness driving a power company truck who was eastbound on FM 787 approaching the intersection the Trooper did everything he could to steer clear of the collision. The witness said he was amazed that the Trooper, after impact was still able to steer away from a collision course with him also.

The scene approximately twelve miles east of Cleveland closed the intersection for a little over four hours as the crash was investigated.

Trooper Sanders was transported to Hermann Hospital in Houston in stable condition and was later released with no broken bones but requiring thirteen staples in his head.

Lloyd Morgan was transported to the same hospital where he remains in stable condition.

Another ambulance that left the earlier accident ran up on the scene and was able to call it in and immediately start treating the victims.

The impact was so severe the Troopers hat was crushed between the dash board and the windshield.
