Just before 11 pm Sunday workers were just finishing up at Papa’s BBQ on I-69 at FM 1960 when they discovered a grease fire in the pit area. Humble Fire Department was dispatched. As they were en route they saw a heavy smoke blanket across the freeway blown by the heavy winds. A second alarm was called bringing Houston and Atascocita to assist. Arriving on the scene they had fire in the false ceiling area in the pit area and flames coming out of one of the vent stacks. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the major portion of the fire but had to work to get to the remaining fire in the ceiling area. The restaurant suffered smoke fire damage but also smoke and water damage.
Before firefighters even left crews were already arriving to start repairs on the popular restaurant.
Humble Fire Chief Outlaw said they were lucky to have had the fire where it was. Had it been on the west wall and with the heavy winds the building would have suffered major damage.
