Approximately 4:15pm Conroe firefighters were dispatched to the Forest Creek Apartments on Montgomery Park Drive to a reported apartment fire. As they arrived they had heavy smoke conditions and a second alarm was sounded bringing in River Plantation, North Montgomery, Lake Conroe and The Woodlands Fire Department.
At this point the fire erupted through the roof destroying eight units. Conroe using their ladder truck fought to keep the fire contained to the one building. Ground crews worked in the ninety degree heat to save as much property as possible. At one point what appeared to be ammunition started going off in one of the apartments. As residents sat across the street on the curb Loop 336 became heavily congested as people coming home from work slowed to get a glimpse of the fire and the line of fire trucks that extended out onto the loop.
Sharon Dent was one of those residents who had several cats in the apartment. As she sat a firefighter carried her three-legged cat Memo to her but she is still unsure whether her other two cats made it out.
Fire Marshals were on the scene but said they had not determined what caused the fire but had narrowed it down to two of the apartments and would start working it Friday morning.
