A fiery crash on I-45 near the Walker County line claimed two lives Saturday evening.
Capt. Jimmy Williams, Public Information Office for the New Waverly Fire Department, said the initial dispatch was around 6:30 p.m. First reports said there was a single-vehicle crash on the I-45 main lanes near the county line, where a victim was trapped with a vehicle on fire, he said. NWFD was assisted by North Montgomery County Fire Department who were able to counter-flow on the interstate and reached the scene shortly before New Waverly crews.
“When we accessed the scene and extinguished the fire, we found there were two victims,” Williams said. “It looks like a pickup truck was traveling north on I-45 and for some reason, which is under investigation by DPS, the truck left the roadway and struck a light pole with tremendous force.”
“Both victims were trapped and the truck was literally wrapped around the pole and on fire when we arrived,” Williams said.
After DPS and the Justice of the Peace conducted the investigation and inquest, it took several crews of New Waverly and North Montgomery County firefighters working for quite a while to extricate the victims, due to the “total destruction of the vehicle,” Williams said.
As of this posting, no information regarding the victims was released pending notification of next of kin.
