TWO FIREFIGHTERS DEAD-ANOTHER FIGHTING FOR HIS LIFE-SNIPER DEAD-RADIO COMMUNICATIONS OF INCIDENT

Sunday afternoon a Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho, firefighter called dispatch on the radio asking about smoke he spotted on the mountain. Moments later, a 911 call was received about the fire, and multiple units responded. Just over 30 minutes later, both a Battalion Chief and a dispatcher attempted multiple times to contact both Battalion Chiefs one and three with no answer. Batallion Chief Fives tells the dispatcher he is en route to find out why no communications. Moments after that, Battalion Chief 5 calls on the radio, “Shots fired, Battalion one and three are down, another firefighter hit, we need police, shots fired”. The firefighter then warns others not to come to the parking lot at the base of the mountain where command was set up. Shots were still being fired. Over 300 law enforcement officers responded, including local, Idaho, and Washington State Police and the FBI. Throughout the afternoon, shots continued to be exchanged with the shooter. Finally, about 3 hours later, they found the unidentified shooter and a weapon nearby. During the exchange, hikers and bikers were trapped on trails on the mountain, and residents were told to shelter in place. Now two firefighters are dead, and another is fighting for his life. Other firefighters remain n the scene this morning, trying to contain the wildfire they believe the shooter started to lure first responders in.
