About 12:45 Monday afternoon Cleveland Fire Department was dispatched to the 8100 block of FM 1010 for a house collapse with victims trapped. The location is just east of the Montgomery County line.
Liberty County Sheriff’s Department was first on the scene and found Kelvin Sowell, 44, whose clothes were covered in dirt and sand. He took them to the side of the house where they found Thomas William Nowack, 40, of Splendora halfway under the house with the house resting on his mid-section. Crews immediately were to work to free him. Cleveland Fire Department used air bags to raise the house off of him. Nowack was flown to Hermann Hospital in Houston in critical condition.
Sowell, who was uninjured said they had been raising the house seventeen inches and leveling it with blocks using automotive floor jacks. The house shifted and the blocks fell as in a domino effect. Sowell who was under the house also was able to dig himself out and call 911 for help.
