TWO OFFICERS SHOT IN SOUTH TEXAS

Authorities say a Joaquin Cibrian, suspected of shooting two Edinburg police officers and a man over the weekend is “presumed dead” after an assault by officers on the house  in which he was barricaded.

The scene started at about 4:45 p.m. Tuesday when Edinburg Police were alerted by LaJoya Officers that a vehicle wanted in connection with a homicide in Edinburg of a 19-year-old Mexican national last weekend was spotted in a LaJoya housing project on Leo Avenue.

Most of Tuesday evening shots were exchanged between officers and the suspect but when the front door was breached, tear gas was inserted and more shots were exchanged. The Edinburg officers who were wounded were not able to be approached due to continuous gunfire.

Just before dark two children were reported to have been released from the apartment.

Hidalgo County Sheriff Eddie Guerra said the man is “presumed dead” but that won’t be confirmed until a bomb squad clears the house of booby-trapped explosives the man said he’d rigged.

Police say the two wounded officers and six others pinned down by gunfire have been rescued.

No word yet on the officers conditions.
