TWO-YEAR OLD EJECTED IN SPLENDORA CRASH

Just after 4 pm Sunday, a Dodge pickup was traveling north on the I-69 feeder approaching East River Road. At the same time, a Ford pickup was westbound on East River at I-69. Northbound traffic does not stop at the intersection. However east and westbound traffic does stop and signage is in place notifying drivers “CROSS TRAFFIC DOES NOT STOP”. The Ford pickup stopped for the stop sign and then proceeded to cross the feeder. The Ford was T-boned by the Dodge. Two persons in the Dodge were transported to Memorial Hermann Woodlands in stable condition. The driver and female passenger from the Ford was transported to Kingwood Hospital in stable condition. However, the two-year-old child in the back seat was in a child safety seat. The safety seat was seatbelted to the vehicle. However, the child was not seatbelted in. The child was ejected about fifty feet onto the roadway. The child was transported to Kingwood Hospital in critical condition. EMC and Porter Fire assisted MCHD on the scene.
NOTE: THIS INTERSECTION HAS BEEN THE SITE OF MANY, MANY CRASHES DUE TO THE SAME SITUATION. THE CITY OF SPLENDORA HAS PLEADED WITH TXDOT TO CHANGE THE SIGNAL LIGHTS HOWEVER IT HAS FALLEN ON DEAF EARS. WITH EAST RIVER BEING A BACK, ROUNDABOUT WAY FROM THE PLUM GROVE AREA MANY OF THE CRASHES INVOLVED HISPANICS. AFTER SEEING THE SIGN WARNING OF THE CROSS TRAFFIC THIS REPORTER COMMUNICATED WITH SEVERAL NON-ENGLISH SPEAKING HISPANICS. THE CONCLUSION NONE OF THEM KNEW WHAT THE SIGN SAID. IF NOT A LIGHT AT LEAST IMPROVE THE SIGNAGE BEFORE ANOTHER PERSON IS INJURED OR KILLED.
