The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers are investigating a fatal crash on U.S. Highway 59, just north of Livingston, that occurred today, December 7, 2023. The preliminary crash investigation indicates that at approximately 4:17 p.m., a Livingston ISD school bus was northbound and stopped in the outside lane with its flashing red lights and stop sign extended to off load a 15-year-old child. Behind the school bus was a Toyota passenger car. It is reported that a truck tractor semi-trailer was traveling north and struck the rear of the passenger car and then veered right, where he struck the child in the driveway. The driver of the Toyota, identified as 28-year-old Autumn Witt of Lufkin, was not injured. The driver of the truck tractor, identified as 41-year-old Gregory Jackson, was not injured. The child, identified as a 15-year-old male, was pronounced deceased on scene by a Justice of the Peace. The driver of the 18-wheeler was taken to the hospital for a blood draw as he was believed to be impaired as there was a strong odor of marijuana coming from the truck. The truck is owned by Livingston Trucking Company of Texarkana, Texas and is part of a fleet of 87 trucks according to the Federal Department of Transportation.
