UPDATE-ERIK WILL NOT FINISH RACE

Moments ago Erik Richenberger, the Montgomery County Paramedic who was attempting to ride from Canada to New Mexico along the Great Divide has pulled from the ride. After almost 200 miles of the 2750 mile ride he went down last night with hypothermia. Erik has a child on the way due in September and with the thought of that and his lovely wife at home worried about him with last nights episode he made the decision. Even if Erik warmed up enough to continue the race the chances of additional hypothermia setting in is great. He is already worn down and the next several nights in the higher elevations the temperatures will again drop into the 30’s and 40’s.

Billy Rice and his daughter Lina who are about 200 miles ahead of Erik report heavy mud on the trails and having to walk 15 to 20 miles to get through it at times.

The last 750 miles Erik would have ridden would have taken just over 12 more days.

He has proven himself as nobody else would have put themselves through such torture for a cause.

Please wish him well and give him the credit for what he has done. He may not have made the finish but we will have our paramedic alive and well back here in Montgomery County once again responding to the emergency medical needs of the community.

ERIKS POST MOMENTS AGO

After a heavy conversation with the wife and family, we feel that I should drop from the race after last night’s events. I know Marianne is scared and with a little one on the way I don’t want to put her through too much stress.

It’s a decision we made together, but one that i ultimately had final decision on. I’ve given this thing my best… truly pushed myself further than I ever thought possible. My only regret is letting any of you down.

I wish the other racers safety on the rest of their journey.
