Last Saturday two teens from the area who had been sentenced and were incarcerated at the Texas Juvenile Detention Center (Giddings State School) in Gidding, Texas escaped. Brice Ryan Karalis of Splendora and Bryan Ernando Villanueva got out of their dorm just after 9pm and sprinted across the nearly 200 acres facility and climbed the fence, including going over razor wire, not setting off any perimeter alarms. They then stole a white pickup at an nearby oil company. The keys had been left in the vehicle which is almost a common thing in that area and several areas of Texas where major crime doesn’t seem to be an issue. Lee County Sheriff’s Office immediately put out a broadcast and used the reverse 911 system to local residents. The Texas Rangers were notified and immediately started investigating. Karalis who is from the Splendora/Cleveland area. Villanueva is from Spring. One of the males is serving 15-years for armed robbery. Sunday afternoon just as DPS, Texas Rangers and local law enforcement was about to run on a home off Fostoria Road looking for Karalis the dispatcher alerted them to a suspicious truck near the ball fields in New Caney. The white stolen truck was abandon on the side of the road, apparently out of gas. As law enforcement searched the area persons at the park alerted them to the possible direction of the two 16-year-olds. They were located in the woods just behind the park and several homes. The key for the stolen truck was in the pocket of one of the teens. They now face additional charges of escape and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
