At 2:23 a.m. this morning MCHD and the Magnolia Fire Department were dispatched to a major accident with rollover and vehicle on fire. The location was given as FM 1488 at Mill Creek.
As units arrived on the scene they found a 1988 GMC Stepside pickup truck in Mill Creek and on fire. A passenger of the vehicle had already been pulled to safety by a retired chaplin who lived in the area. He was just returning home when he heard the crash and after further investigation discovered the fire. The driver had perished in the fire. The passenger was taken to Hermann Hospital in the Woodlands with a broken leg which is believed to have been a previous injury.
Wreckers spent over an hour attempting to get the vehicle out of the creek and up onto the roadway to enable firefighters to remove the driver. The driver, who was severely burned was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Matt Masden. He ordered the body be transported by Cashner Funeral Directors to the Montgomery County Forensic Center for autopsy.
According to Trooper Gray with the Texas Department of Public Safety the pickup was westbound on FM 1488 when it came out of a curve, hit the guardrail and then rode the guardrail until it went over and down the embankment into Mill Creek. It is unknown what caused the fire at this time as it was confined to the cab and the bed area of the truck
