Just before midnight, Abraham Cana was southbound on I-45 coming home from work. Just after passing FM 1097 in Willis a Honda Accord approached him on the right shoulder going the wrong way. As Cana went to the left lane he saw a fireball in his mirror. An MCHD unit that was southbound on I-45 en route to the hospital with a patient saw the crash also and stopped. It was immediately evident the 21-year-old driver of the Honda was deceased. Just down the road, about 100 yards was an 18-wheeler loaded with rolls of cotton. The cab of the truck was fully involved in fire. The truck driver was able to escape with minor injuries and was transported to the hospital. Conroe Police closed the southbound freeway and feeder, Firetrucks approaching the scene were met with a large debris field several hundred yards long. They were able to quickly bring the fire under control but several tires were impaled with the debris from the roadway. Montgomery County Justice of the Peace Wayne Mack responded to the scene for the inquest. He ordered Eickenhorst Funeral Directors to transport the victim who is identified as Kevin Jose Alvarado, 21, of Conroe to the Montgomery Coutny Forensic Center for autopsy.
