VICTIMS IDENTIFIED IN SATURDAYS SH 249 HEAD-ON CRASH AND FIRE WITH TWO FATALITIES

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers are investigating a three-vehicle crash on state Highway 249 near Farm-to-Market 1774. The preliminary crash investigation indicates on Apr. 1, 2023, at approximately 8:40 a.m., a 2002 Toyota Sequoia was traveling northbound when it went into the oncoming lane and struck a 2016 Ford Taurus that was traveling southbound. The Ford was then struck by a 2019 Chevy pickup traveling southbound. The driver of the Toyota, Antonio Torres, 21, of Huntsville, was pronounced deceased on the scene by Grimes County Justice of the Peace Lester Underwood. The driver of the Ford, Marvin Mathis, 33, of Burton, was pronounced deceased on the scene by Grimes County Justice of the Peace Lester Underwood. The passenger Lakendra Mathis, 30, of Navasota, was transported to Herman Memorial Woodlands in critical condition.
The driver of the Chevrolet, Keidy Carcamo Baires, 21, of Tomball, was transported to Tomball Regional Hospital with suspected minor injuries. Where the crash occurred is at a point where the toll road ends and the road goes from a four-lane divided highway to a two-lane as you pass the FM 1774 exit ramp and approach the overpass. This is an ongoing investigation, and there is no additional information available for release at this time.
