DISCIPLINE OF DAY CARE TODDLERS QUESTIONED AT ROMAN FOREST SWIMMING POOL
Friday afternoon lifeguards at the Roman Forest swimming pool called Roman Forest City Administrator Liz Mullane of concerns of a day care group at the pool. The guards reported that the teachers of the ABC123 Daycare Center had several children ages 5 and 6 that were fighting in the pool. The teachers put them in time out and forced the toddlers to sit on the red clay brick edge of the pool with their feet in the water. Knowing that it was 98 degrees outside and the red brick had to have been a lot hotter, Mullane immediately responded to the poll and also notified Roman Forest Police to respond.

When she arrived she met with the day care director Pat Elkins who was also called and responded to the scene.

Elkins admitted the children were forced to be put in time out and sit on the edge of the pool with their feet in the water. She said some of the teachers were also splashing water on them. Mullane said, “the pavement was hot and could burn somebody’s skin let alone their wet little bottoms”.

After talking with police and the city administrator it was determined no charges would be filed. Mullane, however did state that the teachers were informed they could no longer punish the children in that manner and the teachers needed more responsibility in watching the children and not putting the burden on the lifeguards.

The lifeguards at Roman Forest have been responsible for 3 saves already this year.

TEXAS A+M FIRE SCHOOL BURN NIGHT
Training that’s realistic, large-scale, and hands-on. Located adjacent to the Texas A&M University campus, the 297-acre facility attracts more than 45,000 emergency responders from all 50 states and more than 45 countries each year.

The 132 specific training stations offer emergency responders instruction in firefighting, rescue, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, marine, aircraft, and emergency management.

This week they are holding the 90th Annual Municipal Fire School. This school is for local departments worldwide. On Wednesday night they held their annual Burn Night. This is the night the families and friends of the firefighters in training and past and current firefighters come out to watch what the firefighters are up against. These firefighters tolerate the 90+ degree temperatures along with heavy equipment and heat of the fires not to mention the heat emitted from the black asphalt. Firefighters for the first year go through training on car fires, house fires, equipment and fire characteristics. Each year they step to another level, fighting rail car fires, rescues, fighting fuel loading dock fires all the way through commanding a scene and teaching command staff how to deal with the media. Arson is also included in the advanced schools. Texas A&M Fire School is the largest in the world. Many large companies worldwide send their fire crews to train, Conoco Phillips and several others have also assisted in setting up scenarios to help train. A second week is the Industrial School for large oil and industrial firefighters. The municipal school is open to all local and volunteer departmentS. The male was screaming and throwing his hands in the air as he continued to run, exhibiting abnormal behavior. The deputy attempted to get the unknown male to stop so a welfare check could be conducted: however, the male did not acknowledge the deputy’s presence. The deputy observed the male drop an unknown item (later identified as a cell phone) but continue to run. As the deputy activated his spotlight to attempt to get the male’s attention, the male continued to run away from the deputy who was in his patrol car. The security guard stood with his had stretched out signaling for the suspicious male to stop while also yelling stop. The male charged toward the security guard and began assaulting him. The guard was struck numerous times before being knocked to the ground by the male. At that time, the deputy attempted to stop the assault by using his taser, an electronic stun device, which was ineffective. A second deputy arrived and immediately joined the attempts to gain control of the male who continued to ignore all commands to get on the ground. The second deputy deployed his taser, which was temporarily effective: however, only briefly as the male rolled away. As deputies continued to give verbal commands to the male the security guard fired his pistol from his position on the ground, striking the male twice. Although deputies rendered life-saving measures, the male succumbed to his injuries before MCHD arrived on the scene.
The incident is being investigated by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office and the Texas Rangers.
