MONTGOMERY COUNTY SEARCH AND RESCUE DRILL IN NATIONAL FOREST A SUCCESS
Mock searches by MOCSAR are used to train new members of Montgomery County Search and Rescue and to refresh their veteran team members. It also allows them to interact and learn from other agencies involved.
The more specific objective of the exercise to work cooperatively with the US Forest Service, the Texas Guard, and the Civil Air Patrol. The chance to test the new pontoon boat, and to timely deploy the divers, dog teams, and ground searchers.

Saturday morning was busy for the teams as first they were dispatched to a reported past due return of two campers. After searching the campground after the families called and told authorities they were missing a search was started by Forest Rangers. The sleeping bags had not been slept in and there was a canoe rack on the roof of the vehicle. There was also handgun ammunition in the camp. After talking to people in the area they learned the two were going out fishing and to shoot a few turtles the night before. There was no answer on the cell phones. A teenager told officials that the night before she had seen the canoe off in the distance rocking with two men and what sounded like fireworks going off. She said they sounded like cherry bombs and one flashed really big on the boat.
The search team was alerted and deployed and in a short time found the canoe on the shoreline with a wounded boater. He has a serious hand-wound and shrapnel wounds to the leg. It was learned they had been shooting and the gun exploded in his hand. Besides him being injured his friend fell overboard after being hit in the face with shrapnel. He immediately submerged. While crews treated the injured man the Texas Guard deployed to the area that the boater thought the incident happened. They had to not just recover a body but a gun to verify the boater’s story.
Both were found within several hours.
Also Friday night some campers with their children made an arrangement for a pilot friend in a small plane to fly over the campground to impress the kids. After learning of the missing canoe the pilot was notified by the friend to see if he could spot anything. The plane left to the east. Later that night the friend talked to the pilot friend’s wife who said she had not heard from him.
At the same time as a father and son were camping a low flying aircraft scared their dog. Thinking the worst the father and son hit the trail as they thought they saw the plane go down in some trees. As they walked along with the trail three-four wheeler’s sped by spooking the dog once again. Both father and son ran gain. The dog ran off ignoring repeated calls. As they chased the dog over some fallen trees the father fell and heard a snap. It was his leg. With no cell service in the woods, he told his son to go back to the trail and call 911. A deputy found the boy and his dog along FM 1375.
The plane was later found and the pilot was dead.

In addition, Friday night a new resident to the National Forest area heard on the scanner about the plane and thinking it was close to him off Calvary Road he went into the woods to look. It wasn’t long before he became lost and tried calling 911 but the call dropped. After several attempts to call 911, he was finally able to get the words lost in woods out before the signal was lost again. This time dispatchers were able to ping the phone and determined he was located 1800 feet from the end of Forest Road 234a. He was also found

CLEVELAND FLEA MARKET FIRE
At 2:49 am a report of a large fire was received by Montgomery and Liberty County Fire Dispatchers. Immediately trucks started making their way to Fostoria and I-69 where the fire was reported but were unable to locate it. Within seconds an orange glow was seen just past Anderson Ford and across the Liberty County line. As units arrived they found a flea market which had ben built several years ago with heavy smoke and flames showing. Immediately a second alarm was sounded and a third alarm minutes later.

Over 70 firefighters battled the blaze which was brought under control at 5:15 am.

There are no injuries, however building one was a total loss. Firefighters attempted to make entry but with wood construction collapse was a major concern.

SAN JACINTO RIVER RAILROAD TRESTLE WASHED OUT AT KINGWOOD
Homes and businesses were not the only things damaged by the massive flow of water down the San Jacinto River. As the water rushed through it picked up pieces of homes, large trees, and other debris and sent it toward Lake Houston. Some of that debris made it to Humble and US 59 where it became wedged against the US 59 bridge and the Union Pacific Railroad Bridge. This acting like a beaver dam held water back even more but put tremendous forces on the bridges. The Union Pacific trestle was the heaviest damage that Union Pacific suffered in Houston. Two sections were lost. Crews are now on the scene removing another three sections and plan to change the design to let water flow better. Instead of five sections, they will go with four wider sections. Until then all northbound rail traffic between Harris and Montgomery County is at a standstill. The only train traffic now is loads of large boulders being placed along the entire length of the line to shore up any roadbed that may have washed away.
