From 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. TOMORROW (Wednesday, December 2), family, friends and the public are invited to attend the visitation for Houston Police Department Senior Police Officer Ernest Leal, Jr., who lost his battle with COVID-19 last Friday (November 27).
The visitation will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church at 4918 Cochran Street.
Officer Leal’s body will be escorted from the Brookside Funeral Home-Cypress Creek at 9149 Highway 6 North and arrive at St. Patrick Catholic Church at approximately 1:30 p.m.
The anticipated route is:
START: Brookside Funeral Home-Cypress Creek
Right turn onto Northwest Freeway (U.S. Highway 290) service road inbound
Merge onto Northwest Freeway inbound
Exit onto eastbound 610 West Loop North (West Interstate Highway 610 North)
Exit Hardy Street/Jensen Drive
Right from North Loop East service road onto Cochran Street
END: St. Patrick Catholic Church
A private family viewing and praying the Rosary will precede the public viewing.
During the public viewing, an HPD representative will escort media partners, a few at a time, inside the church to obtain video and pictures. Officer Leal’s family has asked they not be photographed at this time. All attendees are asked to observe COVID-19 protocols and social distancing measures.
Senior Police Officer Ernest Leal was sworn in as an officer in August 1984 and a member of Academy Class #120. During his 36 years of service to the City of Houston, Officer Leal was assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division and briefly the Jail Division. In December 1989, he found his permanent HPD home in the North Patrol Division, serving there more than three decades.
Officer Leal is HPD’s fifth line of duty death within the past 12 months and its first from COVID-19.
