Just after 2:15pm Wednesday afternoon Cut and Shoot Fire Department responded to a reported injury accident at SH105 East and Lee Turner road. This was the site of the fatal crash on April 4 at about the same time.
According to Trooper Zandt, Sharon Casey, 46, was eastbound on 105 with a turn signal on waiting to turn left onto Lee Turner Drive. With her was a passenger Vonda Courtney, 46.
Rhonda Thompson, 55, of Lufkin and her husband were westbound on 105 approaching Lee Turner in their Chevrolet Suburban. They saw the vehicle waiting to turn but then saw an 18 wheeler tank truck owned by Curtis and Son of Liberty, Texas and driven by Michael Newbury,45 also eastbound behind Casey.
The 18 wheeler attempted to avoid hitting the car and swerved. His trailer struck the KIA driven by Casey and spun it into the path of Thompson’s suburban.
Thompson saw it happen and attempted to veer to the right but was unable to avoid striking the KIA.
Just prior to that Casey had dropped off two young grandchildren who had been sitting in the rear of the vehicle where most of the damage was done.
Highway 105 remained closed for almost two hours as the accident was investigated.
Thompson suffered minor injuries to her hand and knee.
There were no other injuries.
Department of Public Safety troopers were assisted by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and Precinct 4 Constables with traffic control.
