24 HOURS IN 2012 KEEPS LAW ENFORCEMENT BUSY
The last 24-hours of 2012 were quite busy for law enforcement officers in East Montgomery County. Monday morning, just after 1 a.m., as Deputy Skero was busy attempting to take Steve Lee Campbell, 53, of 150 North Park Plaza, an intoxicated driver into custody, Lee not just resisted but told the deputy he was a former Special Forces and when he got out he would come looking for him or any other officer. He was jailed on driving while intoxicated, terroristic threat and resisting arrest. Deputy Bergland, not far away on North Park came upon a vehicle in the road. The driver of the 2012 Dodge Charger sped off just as Bergland was able to approach the vehicle. Bergland ran back to his vehicle and attempted to stop the charger. it sped to I-69 (US59) and started heading southbound at close to 120 mph. The vehicle exited Townsend and continued across 1960 on the service road. He continued to Will Clayton where he started to head into the airport complex. Just past Lee Road, he made a u-turn hitting the curb and destroying his front right wheel. When the driver turned back east on Will Clayton he ran over a curb almost striking a light pole. Houston Police and Humble Police now were in the pursuit of assisting Precinct 4. Once again at the freeway, the Charger moved south at close to 100 mph. Crossing Rankin and Greens the driver with sparks flying from the right front wheel turned west on Beltway 8 and sped back up to over 100 mph. With traffic light, the pursuit continued west on the Beltway running through several traffic lights. When the driver reached Greenspoint Drive he turned south and entered a parking lot at a high rate of speed. After driving to the opposite side he jumped out of the vehicle. A foot chase with Montgomery County Precinct 4, Houston Police and Harris County Sheriff’s Department. Approximately 200 yards away Deputy Bergland was able to deploy his taser, bringing the suspect identified as Kevin Darshawn Sneed, 29, of 3537 Mansfield in Houston. A female occupant was also in the vehicle but remained with it. It was then discovered the Charger was stolen from Enterprise Car Rental in Houston and the license plates were stolen from a Houston resident. Sneed was booked into the Montgomery County Jail on evading charges. Additional charges are pending in Harris County. Monday night at 8 p.m. Constable Hayden met with all his officers as it was a mandatory work night to fight intoxicated drivers. Within 30-minutes the first was taken into custody. For the rest of the night that continued. As Judge Laird signed search warrants for mandatory blood draws, two nurses were on hand at the East Montgomery County Office to draw the blood that is then sent to the DPS lab. As one of the deputies pulled an apparently intoxicated driver over at FM 1314 and I-69 (US59) the driver put his vehicle in reverse after pulling over. His vehicle then struck the deputies patrol car doing minor damage. Another traffic stop ended in the arrest of the driver and the seizure of his vehicle after he was found to be intoxicated with children He was arrested for DWI. Dispatchers broadcast an attempt to locate on a vehicle in the Old Houston /FM 1485 area which had been swerving. A deputy spotted the vehicle and arrested the female for DWI. She insisted that her children were in the vehicle but none were found. Another deputy patrolling along I-69 near Creekwood found a vehicle parked on the shoulder but not totally off the freeway. The female driver was also intoxicated and was arrested. Just before 4 a.m. a pickup exiting at FM 2090 stopped on the service road, turned around and started traveling the wrong direction. Several units converged on the area and spotted the vehicle which was able to escape through the Paton Village area and back toward FM 1485 due to driving conditions with heavy fog and rain. As other deputies searched for the vehicle several moved to the FM 1485 east area. That’s when another vehicle almost struck another vehicle. That driver also proved to be intoxicated. Accidents throughout the county were minimal Monday night, a total of 15 arrests were made for DWI. Of the 15, 8 were arrested by Montgomery County Precinct 4 Deputies.

HOUSE BURNS DUE TO FIREWORKS
Just before 3 pm several children were playing on the front porch with roman candle fireworks. The porch of the single wide mobile home caught fire which quickly spread to the home.

A neighbor spotted the flames on the front porch and ran to the backyard of the home alerting the owner. By the time they came around the front flames were creeping inside. An adult female and three children exited the home.

Caney Creek, Porter and New Caney Fire Departments were dispatched to the scene and arrived to find the home heavily involved in fire. Once again water supply became an issue. Tankers from the three departments made a total of over a dozen trips from the scene on Sagebrush Court near Western Hills to the schools in the Grangerland area where fire hydrants were available.

The home was completely destroyed. With the family of five not having insurance the Red Cross was notified. Several neighbors on the street brought bags of clothing and some food to assist the family.

At 5 pm crews are still working on cooling down hotspots.

MEMORIAL FOR CHARLES HATDEN-Farewell to Charles Kenneth Hayden
Video, Photos by Scott Engle / Story by Jamie Nash

Hundreds gathered in Cleveland Tuesday morning to say goodbye to Charles Kenneth Hayden and to celebrate his life.

Mr. Hayden, affectionately known as “Big Guy,” left this world Sunday at the age of 73, but he will live on for generations to come because of his contributions to Montgomery County and the loving generosity he showed his family and so many others.

The standing-room-only crowd spilled out into the foyer and adjacent rooms of the funeral home for the unusual service that began with longtime Precinct 4 Commissioner Ed Rinehart sharing his memories of Charles Hayden. Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace James Metts did the same, along with Hayden’s pastor and some of his family members. The stories had people nodding and smiling through their tears.

Charles Hayden loved his family, law enforcement and Kubota tractors. All were celebrated in various ways throughout the service. His pallbearers wore shirts that matched his trademark white shirt with pearl snap buttons. His casket spray had a tractor on top, and the family ordered Kubota orange-colored flowers in that and several of the arrangements.

The badges Charles Hayden wore during his various service in law enforcement were displayed in a frame, but his service was more evident by the many members of law enforcement attending the service. They wore uniforms and badges from agencies that spanned from Liberty County to the other side of Montgomery County. Montgomery County District Attorney, Brett Ligon, was also in attendance.

In 2010 Charles Hayden’s son, Precinct 4 Constable Kenneth “Rowdy” Hayden, presented the first Constable Charles Hayden Scholarship to a graduating senior in Precinct 4 who studied criminal justice. It was meant to honor Charles Hayden’s service and his devotion to encouraging young people to pursue careers in law enforcement.

But when Charles Hayden spoke to MCPR about it, he did not say much about himself. He spoke more about his only son, who followed in footsteps, joining law enforcement while he was still a teenager.

“I’m very proud of the work he’s doing in the community and in law enforcement,” Charles Hayden said of his son, Rowdy, who he lived to see hold the same position that meant so much to him. He attended all of his son’s events, even when it had to be in a wheelchair and he beamed with pride each time. There was never a doubt in anyone’s mind that the respect between father and son was mutual.

Charles Hayden was also a member of the Sam B. Crawford Masonic Lodge #1418, and many of his lodge brothers attended the service, including Worshipful Master and Roman Forest Police Chief Stephen Carlisle.

Charles Hayden and his wife, Jerry Sue, raised their close-knit family in East Montgomery County, where many of them have also gained the community’s respect in their own right. Although everyone knew his time had grown short, many were visibly distraught at the finality of saying goodbye to “Big Guy.”

It’s an old cliché, but it is also appropriate to say Charles Hayden is gone, but he will not be forgotten.
