WHY TRAVEL TO AUSTIN TO WATCH THE BATS? HUNTSVILLE HAS ONE OF BIGGEST CONINIES IN THE STATE

Just before sunset what is estimated at 750,00 bats take to the sky in Huntsville. The bats have taken up residence in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Cotton Warehouse adjacent to the west side of the Walls Unit in downtown Huntsville. Texas Parks and Wildlife have unsuccessfully tried to lure them away. However, the site may be in danger if TDCJ continues its efforts to demolish the building build in 1930. Some of the brickwork beauty hasn’t been seen this century.

Texas Bat Refuge is looking to save the bats and keep them in the area. Fars is that 750,000 bats will have no other place to go other than the prison, homes, and schools. One reason they were able to take up residence was TDCJ’s failure to keep the building maintained. Broken windows and doors were the open invitation to the winged creatures.
